Simple file searching without Spotlight

EasyFind by DEVONtechnologies is a free file search utility that helps you locate items on your computer without leaning on the system’s default search. It positions itself as a Spotlight alternative by running searches directly through the file system instead of depending on an index. That approach can help when built-in search results look incomplete or out of date. EasyFind keeps the focus on finding files and folders, rather than adding a long list of extra tools.

Top Recommended Alternative

A focused Mac search tool with advanced queries

EasyFind stays centered on local searching for Mac, with tools that go beyond a basic filename lookup. The app supports non-indexed search, which can improve reliability when indexing causes misses. Searches can target names and also search file contents, which helps when the filename is not memorable. Advanced query options such as regular expressions also fit users who want precise matching, although that level of control can feel less approachable for casual searching.

Reliable scanning with fewer smart shortcuts

Non-indexed scanning has a clear tradeoff. Results can feel dependable because they come from direct scanning rather than a database, which is a strong plus for troubleshooting and deep searches. Large drives and broad queries can take longer than an indexed tool, especially when searching inside files. EasyFind also leans practical over polished, so the experience can feel more utilitarian than the system search, even though the layout stays straightforward once you know what you want to find.

Built for file discovery, not a general search hub

EasyFind focuses on file and folder discovery, rather than trying to act like an all-in-one search bar. That narrow scope can be a benefit if your goal is consistent local results, including harder-to-spot items that indexing can skip. The flip side is that it does not try to surface apps, web suggestions, or broader system content in the same way some built-in tools do. Users who want a dedicated desktop search tool for files can appreciate that focus.

A practical choice for simple searches and power users

EasyFind fits people who want a dependable Spotlight alternative with controls that scale from simple lookups to more technical searches. The ability to run non-indexed search and use regular expressions adds real flexibility, while the file-only approach keeps distractions low. Slower scans on very large storage and a functional interface are the main downsides. For day-to-day file hunting and occasional deep searches, it offers a clear, no-nonsense experience.

By far the best search tool! Makes Spotlight look positively Ill in comparison. Simple, straight forward interface with good descriptions of what goes in to the search field. And very fast (!) without pre-indexing a drive. (4TB mirrored drive, via Thunderbolt, searching appx. 7 million files in under a minute) And, unlike Spotlight, search's for invisible items, too. Can't live without it.
